Launching our campaign for 21st Century SRE

Today, we are kicking off a big new national campaign demanding that all young people should have access to relevant, useful, 21st century sex and relationships education in school.

We commissioned a survey and sadly nearly half – 47% of young people said their SRE was unsatisfactory or nonexistent. And did you know that secondary schools aren’t actually required to teach SRE at all apart from basic biology? Unfortunately, it’s true – and 26% of the young people we surveyed say that they got no sex and relationships education at all.

That’s just not good enough.

Right now, the Government is conducting a review of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education, and sex and relationships education is taught within PSHE, so those of us who care about giving young people the advice and information they need have a rare opportunity to be heard. We think it’s time for all schools to offer a truly 21st Century SRE curriculum:

This means:

  • Giving young people an opportunity to speak up about what they need to know and understand.
  • Lessons taught by well trained professionals who are confident about the subject.
  • Focusing as much on relationships, consent, human sexuality and the emotional side of growing up as on the biology of reproduction.

Please sign our petition now, and stay tuned for lots more as we roll out our new campaign across the country!
